Cultural Tourism
One of the pillars of the tourism industry has been the inherent desire of people to see and learn about the cultural identity of different parts of the world. Tourists from European countries tend to travel independently and value destinations where they can experience the local way of life. The ‘cultural tourist’ market has been growing at around 15 per cent per annum over the last decade.
Two Tauranga organisations have formed a joint venture to explore the possibility of developing a tourist destination that will allow visitors to discover the uniqueness of Tauranga. Mangatawa Tourism is a partnership between Mangatawa Papamoa Blocks Inc and the Department of Discovery Ltd. It is headed by Andrew Te Whaiti, who has extensive experience in the tourism industry, both in New Zealand and overseas, and is passionate about increasing the region’s international presence.
The Mangatawa experience is not just a tourism product - it is about experiences and the discovery of a place. "Our partnership is about doing things in a different way. This is a unique entity that will manage the coexistence between culture and commerce (tourism) in a way that renders a respect to all elements," says Andrew.
