Energy
The capacity and security of electricity supply into and around the sub-region is of vital importance, particularly in light of our projected population growth. Priority One has investigated issues around electricity supply to ensure both short and long terms needs are able to be met. In addition, new energy initiatives and opportunities are being looked at in the Bay of Plenty as part of a regional energy strategy.
The strategy was developed by representatives from the business community, economic development agencies and Environment Bay of Plenty to deliver economic growth and wellbeing through the development and use of sustainable energy. Energy is currently generated from two main resources in the region: water and geothermal. The study that formed the basis of the strategy found that the Bay of Plenty is potentially one of the most energy-rich regions in the country, particularly in the areas of untapped sustainable energy such as geothermal, hydro-power, solar and biomass.
The strategy estimates that over the next 15 years the region could attract up to $4 billion worth of investment in sustainable energy development and generate more than 15% of the country’s energy requirements and 10% of its liquid transport fuels. The strategy recognises the strong position of local iwi in realising these economic outcomes once treaty settlements are concluded. Maori have large land holdings and forestry resources, as well as stewardship of significant geothermal fields and resources in the region, offering huge energy opportunities.
