Maori economic development
Energy Resources
As part of the Bay of Connections regional economic development strategy, Environment Bay of Plenty held an energy forum to seek feedback from stakeholders on the draft Regional Energy Strategy. The strategy covers a 15 year timeframe and seeks to deliver economic growth and wellbeing through the development and use of sustainable energy. The Bay of Plenty is potentially one of the most energy-rich regions in the country, particularly in the areas of untapped sustainable energy such as geothermal, hydro-power, solar and biomass.
The strategy estimates that over the next 15 years the region could attract up to $4 billion worth of investment in sustainable energy development and generate more than 15% of the country’s energy requirements and 10 per cent of its liquid transport fuels. The strategy recognises the strong position of local iwi in realising these economic outcomes once treaty settlements are concluded. Maori have large land holdings and forestry resources, as well as stewardship of significant geothermal fields and resources in the region, offering huge energy opportunities.
