High Performance Sports Centre

Tauranga City Council’s Bay Venues has developed an elite high performance sports centre at Blake Park – the largest high performance gym in the country.  The centre caters for high performance athletes in a range of sports including rugby, rugby sevens, cricket and hockey, as well sports organisations, sports science research and sports medicine.  The facility is home to Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, the New Zealand Rugby Union (Sevens), New Zealand Women’s Seven and Body In Motion physiotherapy and sports medicine.

A partnership with the University of Waikato will see the High Performance Sports Centre become a leading provider of testing and research into sports science and human performance.  The University of Waikato's tenancy will include a purpose-built laboratory for sports science and research and athletic performance testing and a state-of-the-art environmental chamber, which will be able to control specific heat and humidity requirements.  It will also offer the capability to simulate a high altitude environment.

Priority One is supporting Bay Venues through linkages with the tertiary sector, as well as jointly working to attract key sports organisations to the region.
