Yantai, Shandong Province, China
Yantai is Tauranga’s longest sister city relationship, celebrating 30 years of relations in 2016. It covers an area of 13,000km², has a population of seven million people and serves as a logistics hub connecting the Beijing-Tianjin economic circle, Yangtze River Delta and the north east Asia economic rim. Yantai is the origin of Shandong cuisine and is well known throughout China for producing apples, pears, cherries and wine. Wine production in Yantai accounts for a quarter of total production in China. Like Tauranga, Yantai is an important centre for marine research through the Yantai Coastal Zone Institute.
Tauranga and Yantai are working together on a number of projects related to:
- International education exchange;
- Marine science;
- Trade development; and
- Tourism promotion.
