HARBOUR CENTRAL MARINE PRECINCT
Priority One and Tauranga City Council recently issued a “Request for Expressions of Interest” (EOI) for the development of a new multi million dollar marine precinct in Tauranga. Harbour Central Marine Precinct is an initiative that will see a state-of-the-art marine business park developed on land beside the Tauranga harbour bridge. An economic impact study has forecast up to 520 new jobs and over $100 million of revenue into the economy each year from a development of this type.
The EOI seeks proposals from potential developers and investors to move forward with a staged development of the 5.1 hectare site on Tauranga City Council-owned land at Sulphur Point. Closing on 31 May, the EOI welcomes innovative ideas and suggestions, particularly in relation to staging of the project. Depending on the response, construction could begin before the end of the year.
Priority One chief executive Andrew Coker says “The initiative has been designed to attract the multi-billion dollar international marine industry to the region. Working in tandem with Auckland and Whangarei, it is likely we could bring more vessels and super yachts from the Northern Hemisphere, consolidating New Zealand’s reputation as the world’s premier boat building and marine refit destination.” The EOI closed on 31 May and proposals are currently being assessed.
