The NZCT AIMS Games is an iconic sporting event for intermediate school age students, bringing over 10,000 people to the sub-region for the week of competition.
Taking place during September each year, the NZCT AIMS Games sees students travel from around New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands to take part in what is now the largest sporting event in New Zealand. A partnership between Sport Bay of Plenty, the four Western Bay intermediate schools and Tauranga City Council, the sporting championships give 11, 12 and 13 year olds an opportunity to compete as individuals or in a team in 17 different sports.
Unique to the city, the games have grown from a small festival of sport to become the international championships for intermediate and middle schools. In 2004 there were 760 competitors representing 17 schools in four sporting codes. In 2013 a record 6500 students from 193 schools took part – an 18% increase from the previous year - including seven teams from Australia and one from the Cook Islands. Over 1400 coaches, managers and officials travelled with the students, and there were lots of parents that came to Tauranga to watch the events. Most accommodation businesses in the area were fully booked during the week the event was held. As at June 2014, 221 schools have registered for this year’s event.
