BOP Clinical Campus has sites at both Tauranga and Whakātane Hospitals, and is responsible for student placements, clinical research and staff education.
The BOP Clinical Campus manages approximately 80 medical students per academic year. The students are mainly in hospital-based placements, with some assigned to community settings such as GP clinics. In addition to medicine, undergraduate students from a spectrum of health disciplines are also involved in student placements.
A Whakatane based Rural Health Inter-professional Programme has students from a spectrum of health disciplines not only working together, but living together. The students learn about rural health and the disparities in rural healthcare and are encouraged to address these in a multi-disciplinary way. This has also resulted in a stream of students returning to work in rural communities once qualified.
Education and Research are our other major activities. Education includes development of all online programmes and managing facilities for class-room and skills-based training. The Clinical Trials Unit supports both internal DHB clinical research activity and coordinates international pharmaceutical studies that provide critical treatments for life-limiting health conditions such as cancer.
