We commence the DayBreak Innovation Summit with a showcase of Māori innovation, spearheaded by Toi Kai Rawa, the regional Māori economic development trust in the wider Bay of Plenty.

This inaugural session features a panel of leading Māori innovators, delving into projects where Matauranga Māori and Western science converge, and giving insight into ambitious initiatives throughout our region. This is an opportunity to grow your understanding of the essence of innovation from a Māori perspective, and explore how indigenous concepts are being applied to create value, deliver prosperity and unlock untapped potential.

Explore practical demonstrations of how robotics, automation, and human assist technologies work, through applications to horticulture.

Embark on a hands-on exploration of cutting-edge technology via our region’s leading export industry, horticulture. This workshop invites participants to gain practical insights into the inner workings of robots, automation and human assist devices through interactive demonstrations and simulation, to see how it works from fundamentals to real-world applications.

Hosted by scientists and engineers at the University of Waikato, you’ll have the opportunity to rub shoulders with experts who are building and using these technologies in the region and experiment with prototypes. While there is a focus on horticulture, this session is for anyone who wants to know about the reality of robotics and automation, or who wants to see how the Western Bay is leading the world in hort tech.

Marketing Innovation Masterclass - Strategy and Agencies

Hosted by: Wave (Brendan Herring) and King St (Chris Williams and James Cleary)

Get expert insights into creating and delivering winning marketing campaigns and making the most of agencies in doing this.

This workshop provides a deep dive into successful marketing innovation, focussing on two key elements: marketing strategy and working with agencies. Marketing strategy led by Brendan Herring (Creative Strategist and Director of Wave Agency). Learn about the award winning ‘It just works’ advertising campaign Wave recently produced alongside local company Brother NZ – winner of two 2023 TVNZ B2B marketing awards and finalist in the 2023 Effies. Brendan will share the process, insights, thinking and finished collateral giving a glimpse behind the scenes to see the work that went into the successful campaign.

Working with agencies is led by Chris Williams and James Cleary (King St), who bust some of the myths on agency life, tell about life from the inside and how it’s all changed. They’ll give a blow by blow account of some of their worst days and biggest mistakes, what they’ve learnt and how they’ve adapted. Along the way, they’ll give some reminders of the blood, sweat and tears that go into their daily lives, and present some tips on how to get the best out of your agency team. Chris and James promise to be open, honest and confronting, with a little bit of humour thrown in too.

Marketing Innovation Masterclass - Generating and Validating Ideas

Develop your skills and knowledge in generating ideas and concepts for marketing, and in testing and validating these for success.

This masterclass focusses on the very start of the marketing process: ideas! The team at Fuel will be talking purposeful idea creation and how to take your ideas & give them life. They’ll tackle what ideas are in advertising and how brands can use them to grow their audience and share examples of idea generation and storytelling techniques. This section will include workshopping some of the techniques to create concepts and how to take your ideas to market and measure success.

Then Karl and Gillian from Snapshot will walk you through the process of validating your product ideas to fuel innovation. During this half of the masterclass Snapshot will look at: preparation for research, concept readiness, defining problems, research processes, methods for market validation, understanding robustness and quality data.

Hybrid Project Management

An introduction to hybrid project management, the emerging best practice for managing innovation projects through creating your own ‘toolkit’.

This session will introduce you to hybrid project management; the emerging practice of managing innovation projects by developing a toolbox of project methodologies. We usually learn project management tools one by one: agile, waterfall, critical chain, rapid learning cycles are some examples. Sometimes we even get told that a certain approach is THE way to do everything.

But in reality, these individual approaches don’t work for all types of projects, or across all of the innovation lifecycle. And project managers are responding to this by creating their own methods by using many different approaches and integrating them together. This is ‘hybrid project management’. It’s something many people are doing, but it isn’t yet recognised in how we train people to manage innovation projects. This session will specifically focus on four frameworks that can be used in a hybrid way for R&D and product development projects; Rapid Learning Cycles, Critical Chain Project Management, Stage Gate and Design Thinking. You’ll gain an understanding of how and when to use hybrid project management, and have an opportunity to workshop elements of the framework to see how it can be applied to your work.

Insights to Investing in Start-up Companies

Learn about and discuss what makes a good start up investment, and the local start-up scene, with local angel investors Jake Hoffart, Jenny Rudd, Julian So and Richard Hoare.

When evaluating new opportunities for investment, what factors need to be considered? This session is hosted by Enterprise Angels, a Tauranga-based Angel investor network that is one of the largest, most active and best resourced in the country. Join the team at Enterprise Angels for an interactive discussion examining the key components of a good start up investment. The team will share key takeaways from their internal case studies, and experienced angel investors will share their learnings.

This session is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about Angel and early stage investing, and how to evaluate investment opportunities in startup companies. It’s also suitable for startup founders who want to be ‘investment ready’, or for anyone keen to get an insight into the local start up scene.

Take a bus ride to Ngāpeke Permaculture (Welcome Bay) for an innovation experience from a mātauranga perspective.

This session is a very special opportunity to experience innovation from a Mātauranga Māori worldview with a field trip to Ngāpeke Permaculture, located in Welcome Bay. The Ngāpeke Permaculture team are enlisting locals and whānau to realise the full potential of this block of land, its surroundings and community, following the principles of:

Kai Mahamaha – food abundance and food security, including a ‘Food Forest’.
Tiaki Taiao – earth care, using earth-friendly practices to ensure that their footprint or tapuwae has no negative impact on the land or environment in which they live.
Oranga Tangata – people care, by introducing our community (and the wider community) to natural gardening practices as is the case with traditional māra kai – a traditional form of natural gardening used by Māori.

You’ll see these principles in action, as well as learn how Ngāpeke is breaking down barriers between Māturanga and western science, with projects in carbon emissions reduction, pesticide alternatives and automation.

The Redesign of Everything

A hands-on introduction to, and workshop with, principles of circular design.

This is an opportunity to get immersed in the world of circular design. Less than 10% of the world is circular so we have the opportunity to redesign almost everything to work with nature, and in doing so unlock a better way of doing business for people and the planet. No matter what your business or organisation, if you have an interest in designing the future to be circular, this session is for you! You’re welcome to join as an individual or form a team bringing an object of choice (such as your product or service) to redesign.

The expert team from Circularity will facilitate a mini-design sprint starting with an introduction to our circular-by-design innovation tool kit before kicking into a guided co-design of a chosen object to become circular. The session will culminate in prototypes for an ‘innovative circular solutions’ showcase which will be photographed and shared across our channels.

Come along and learn about Beca’s digital storymaps, an interactive tool that enable you to explore your hometowns and communities, and engage in helping shape the spaces you care about.

See how this technology can bring your story to life by delivering a spatial representation of your project. There’ll be a live demo, and an opportunity to get some hands-on experience and learn some tricks to engaging better with our communities.

The session will be led by Beca’s Community Shaping and Digital teams who used the same approach in their award-winning project to deliver the 30-year plan for Waipā District Council in partnership with Mana Whenua.

Go behind the scenes of Tauranga’s heritage collection, and explore innovation in museum experiences and design.

This is a very special opportunity to view the Tauranga Heritage Collection and learn about the latest thinking and innovations in museum experiences. Greg McManus (TCC Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage), will set the stage for an immersive experience which includes a ‘behind the scenes’ guided tour of the museum collections, where you’ll encounter some the museum’s intriguing and unique taonga (objects) and their stories.

You’ll also have the opportunity to share and explore innovative thinking in museum experiences with NZ’s premier exhibition design company Workshop e. As well as hearing about the latest in museum experiences, best practice and local opportunities, participants will be asked to share their expectations and aspirations for the role of a museum in their own cultural and social landscapes. Come prepared to share an encounter in a museum or gallery that has impressed, surprised, challenged or delighted you!

A fun and creative session hosted by WOODS Agency on how to build a brand that works. Learn techniques, simple processes and the fundamentals of how to develop a Brand Strategy, Story and Identity for your product or service.

In this workshop you’ll have the chance to explore how to create a brand, including Strategy (Purpose, Positioning, Culture, Customer), Story and Identity. You’ll see how when all of these are well thought out, work together and are consistent, they can create a solid foundation for your brand. Set on the water’s edge of the Tauranga harbour, The Cargo Shed will be the festival hub during DayBreak Festival of Innovation. All plenary sessions and social functions during the summit will be hosted at The Cargo Shed. Breakout session venue information will be made available closer to the event.
