The Western Bay of Plenty’s first Regional Energy Summit marked an important milestone in shaping a sustainable energy future for our region. Hosted at the University of Waikato, the summit brought together business leaders, industry experts, and key stakeholders to explore how we can unlock cleaner, smarter, and more resilient energy systems across the region.
Energy is at the heart of every successful business and community. From low-temperature geothermal solutions and wood-based energy fuels to green hydrogen and advanced electricity distribution systems, the conversations at the summit showcased the innovation already driving our transition away from traditional energy sources. Companies like Geo Exchange, Foresta, Hiringa Energy, and Powerco shared insights into how decarbonisation and local energy generation can strengthen both our regional economy and our national sustainability goals.
The summit also marked the formation of the Energy Leadership Group a cross-sector coalition of regional leaders who will help guide the development and implementation of the Western Bay of Plenty’s Energy Strategy. Chaired by representatives from Beca and supported by Priority One, this group will focus on building connections between industry, infrastructure, and innovation to accelerate progress toward a low-emissions, high-opportunity energy future.

As one participant put it, the day was “energising” in every sense, highlighting the talent, commitment, and collaboration already taking place in our region. The summit wasn’t just a conversation; it was the start of collective action.
