A critical part of enabling successful employment outcomes across the Western Bay is to promote greater awareness of the wide variety of vocational pathways available to youth.

Priority One’s Instep Programme is an education programme that links the region’s education communities with business and has a focus on showcasing trades training and other vocational careers that have substantial employment demand in the region.

The Instep team collaborates with local secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and businesses to promote local career pathways, including trades-based careers, and to provide students with work experience opportunities.

In the past twelve months, the team have hosted over ten events and provided over 3,500 students across Western Bay of Plenty schools and their parents, a chance to learn about various fantastic businesses and industries. Events have included:

These initiatives offer young people the opportunity to experience a range of pathways and career options, learn about the skills and qualifications required and interact with fantastic working professionals across the region.

By informing and empowering the region’s youth, the programme helps to connect businesses much earlier with young talent coming through our education system and to create a pipeline of talent for the future of work across the Western Bay of Plenty.

Calling young local talent!

There’s plenty of opportunities for local businesses to connect with youth and be involved with Instep across a number of projects that we will be working on in the new year (2023). One project in particular that we are looking forward to, will be focussing on showcasing local young talent who grew up in the Western Bay and are passionate about our region. Specifically, we’re on the search for:

  • Some awesome people with a great story to tell
  • Aged between 18-24
  • Who went to school here in the WBOP

To inspire our youth, and share all the reasons why the Western Bay is such a great place to invest into a future career, we want to create a collaborative media resource that we can use at major events, youth facing communications and to support the Instep Programme in promoting the diverse and rewarding career paths that are on offer here.

We encourage you to share this opportunity with your organisation and other local businesses, and invite you to put yourself or your team forward as a great way to profile your business and to recognise people in your staff doing great things!

If this sounds like you or anyone you know, get in touch with us here!
