Local street artist Tautoko Matehaere will be creating graffiti art at the expo.

A local street artist, a fashion show and a film festival are just some of the things on offer at the Canvas Careers Expo in Tauranga this week.

The Art in Motion experience is just one of the showcase events at this year’s Canvas Tauranga Careers Expo, which runs this Thursday and Friday at Mercury Baypark Arena.

The multi-sensory experience features fashion displays, experimental short films and a ‘Chill Zone’ where anyone can explore creative arts careers.

“We’re thrilled to have Art in Motion as part of this year’s Canvas Careers Expo,” said Rotary Club of Tauranga organiser Sue Boyne.

“This Thursday evening from 6pm-8pm there’s a free fashion show showcasing local designers and a film screening curated by the Third Culture Film Festival.

“It’s going to be amazing. It’s a whole creative universe, built for youth.”

The addition of Art and Motion to the careers expo brings another interactive and dynamic feature to the annual two-day event.

“We have over 60 exhibitors, from tertiary and training providers to key business representatives, in attendance in the arena downstairs, the Art in Motion creative experience upstairs and outside the arena, local street artist Tautoko Matehaere will bring the phrase ‘Art in Motion’ to life with graffiti art during both days of the expo.”

Hosted by Priority One and The Rotary Club of Tauranga, the event is designed to provide a highly interactive environment for students to get an in-depth look at career and training opportunities and talk with training providers and business sector representatives on site.

“Canvas provides a practical way to explore career options. Being able to talk directly with businesses helps you understand what the work involves, what skills are valued and whether it’s the right fit for you,” said Priority One’s Instep manager Michelle Clarke.

“Our team worked closely with schools to promote the event and support student participation.

“Co-ordinating efforts across multiple partners made this a strong, collaborative project from start to finish.”

Exhibitors across technology, infrastructure, innovation and sustainability will be showcasing what it’s like to work in specific industries today and opportunities for the future.

Attendees can also experience the Construction Hub that will be showcasing the diverse roles that make up the construction sector, from hands-on trades to design, planning and project management.

The expo is aimed at students and their parents and whānau, along with adults seeking a career change.

“A lot of the students come as part of a school visit on the Thursday and Friday and then have the opportunity to return with their parents on the Thursday evening,” said Boyne.

“It’s a nice, relaxed environment for them to explore what their future might look like. And, as a parent, it provides an opportunity stand alongside your child while they explore, connect and engage with the opportunities we are showcasing.”

The expo runs this Thursday and Friday from 9am-2pm with the bonus Thursday evening session from 4pm-8pm.

Entry is free.
