Holland Beckett’s recent move back into Tauranga’s city centre is all about supporting the city that has supported the firm’s growth for nearly nine decades.

The law firm Holland Beckett has moved into the newly completed Northern Quarter development on The Strand, occupying the top two levels of the four-storey building. Holland Beckett (or Hobec, as it’s commonly known) played a key role in getting the project off the ground – its early commitment as anchor tenant gave JWL, a locally based property investment trust, the confidence to proceed with the major development.
“When we signed our agreement to lease 2000sqm of the development in November 2022, we weren’t just committing to a new office space. We were getting on board with JWL’s vision – a vision for Tauranga’s future, for the vibrancy of our CBD, and for the kind of collaborative, innovative business community we all want to be part of,” says John Mackay, Partner at Hobec.
An expanding firm
Established in 1937, Holland Beckett has grown alongside Tauranga. In 2008, expansion prompted a move to The Hub on Cameron Road, when there were 42 employees. Today, Hobec is the largest law firm in Tauranga, with nearly 70 lawyers among the 130 people in the new office.
Its specialist teams work across all areas of law, and the open-plan environment continues to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing, strengthening client service and professional development.
Beauty & sustainability in the new space
One of the first things visitors will notice is the spectacular art installation in the central atrium – Māramatanga, which was commissioned from local artist Julie Paama-Pengelly of Ngāi Te Rangi iwi. Māramatanga means enlightenment (see photo above). The suspended piece comprises three sculptural arrangements representing the three bodies of knowledge – kete-aronui, kete-tuauri and kete-tuatea – a metaphor for law as expertise and wisdom. The woven elements for each basket were cleverly created with recycled aluminium window blinds.
Holland Beckett has expansive harbour and city views, and a design that maximises the natural light. The beautifully appointed offices, created by Wingates, is themed around ‘coastal neutrals’, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere.
The layout includes shared breakout areas, meeting rooms with state-of-the-art AV technology, a large staff kitchen opening onto a harbour-facing deck area, and even a yoga room.
A noteworthy achievement is Northern Quarter’s 6 Green Star Design rating, which recognises the sustainability and environmental performance. Contributing features include sensor lighting, energy-efficient air conditioning systems and solar panels.

Setting a new standard in the city
Holland Beckett will continue to contribute to Tauranga’s community life, supporting local sports, cultural and charity initiatives, as well as business and civic events. The firm’s decision to relocate reflects its desire to maintain a strong presence in the heart of a city undergoing major transformation. “Northern Quarter is more than a commercial development – it’s a bold architectural statement,” say John. “It says that Tauranga’s CBD is not standing still. It’s growing up, stepping forward and setting a new standard for what a modern, connected and ambitious city centre can be.
“I am proud that Holland Beckett had the vision and courage to be part of such an amazing development, as anchor tenant. For us, this move is more than a change of address. It’s a commitment to being part of the next chapter of Tauranga’s story – right here, in the heart of the city, where we believe the future is being written.”
