TAURANGA - THE HEART OF THE BAY!
Great cities do not evolve by accident – they come about by having a vision, a strategy and a plan for implementation. Tauranga’s City Centre Strategy has been developed to position Tauranga as a sustainable, vibrant, contemporary city – attracting business and talent, creating high value employment and stimulating economic growth. The cities that are thriving throughout the world are those that offer attractive environments and rich cultural life. This is the formula for a healthy local economy.
Two ‘precinct’ groups have been established to facilitate and encourage activities and growth in the city centre. The Strand Precinct Group, comprising representatives from those operating businesses on The Strand, is focusing on creating a unique destination for food and entertainment that is recognised for its distinctive environment and experience. This includes establishing high quality, permanent outdoor dining and entertainment areas and maximising the opportunities that will arise with the significant investment and development planned on the waterfront over the next few years.
The Retail Precinct Group is made up of businesses that are keen to market the city centre as an ‘experience’ destination, offering a wide range of retail outlets providing the best mix in the region, as well as entertainment, arts & cultural experiences and alfresco dining opportunities. A marketing strategy and programme is being established, as well as the identification of events, activities and promotions that will highlight the city’s vibrancy and ‘heart’.
Implementation of the strategy is funded by Tauranga City Council and led by Priority One in partnership with Tauranga City Council, Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Bay of Plenty, Creative Tauranga, the Property Council, Tauranga Mainstreet and the tertiary partnership.
